BOERNE, TEXAS – (April 23, 2026) – WESTWARD, an engineering, geology, and environmental consulting firm based in Boerne, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Founded in 1996 by two Trinity University graduates, the company has grown from a small, locally focused aggregates consultancy into a full-service firm with more than 50 employees working across engineering, geology, ecology, surveying, permitting, and health and safety.

Under the leadership of co-founders Tommy Mathews, PG, President & CEO, and Gary Nicholls, PE, Executive Vice President & COO, WESTWARD has spent three decades helping clients tackle regulatory challenges through engineering and environmental planning, design, permitting, and compliance across industries ranging from construction and mining to aggregate and industrial operations. From the start, the founders built the company around genuine relationships and doing right by their clients, employees, and the communities in which they work.

“Reaching 30 years reflects the trust our clients place in us, and the commitment of our team members to deliver thoughtful, reliable solutions. We’re proud of how far we have come, and even more excited by what the next 30 years will bring,” said Mathews.

“Some of our best people joined us straight out of college and seeing them grow into the leaders they are today is what 30 years really means to me. I am incredibly proud of how they have developed, taken on new challenges, and shaped the culture of this company. Our success is a direct reflection of our dedicated employees,” said Nicholls.

From their headquarters in Boerne and expanded presence in North Texas, WESTWARD serves a diverse range of clients that include industrial, municipal, commercial, non-profits and environmental organizations across four core disciplines: Environmental Compliance, covering air quality, water resource management, and stormwater pollution prevention; Civil & Industrial Engineering, encompassing site development, drainage design, and construction administration; Geological Assessments, including subsurface characterization, 3D modeling, and reserve calculations; and Natural Resources, focusing on habitat assessments and endangered species compliance.

WESTWARD’s reach extends well beyond Texas. Licensed as engineers, geologists, or both across more than a dozen states, the firm has completed projects in more than 35 states and countries, bringing boots-on-the-ground expertise wherever projects demand it, from California to Florida and from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Beyond their technical work, WESTWARD is committed to giving back and actively supports local organizations in the communities they serve.

Over the years, the company has actively helped shape industry regulations by working with federal agencies and national industry groups such as the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At the state level, the firm has worked closely with the Edwards Aquifer Association, the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association (TACA), the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TXAPA), the Texas Association of General Contractors, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. This experience gives the firm a valuable perspective that benefits both clients and regulators.

As WESTWARD enters its fourth decade, the firm looks ahead with the same confidence that has defined it from the start, a company built on deep relationships, steady growth, and expertise that delivers results that stand the test of time. As a trusted partner, WESTWARD continues to expand its team and capabilities to meet the evolving needs of its clients.
